Ayten Pehlivan

I am a Berlin-based Cypriot poet, visual artist and environmental scientist. My work explores the essence that lies beneath layers of identity and memory, revealing the vulnerable and the unspeakable.

Through the discomfort of unraveling in the continuum of time and experience, I delve into raw, at times surreal representations of the subconscious. Exploring the human nature connection through landscape and earth, behaviour, ancestral heritage and traditions.

My work brings forward themes of love, longing, and incompleteness-undeniable elements of being. What began as a focus on poetry has grown into a multidisciplinary practice that questions the mediums that hold language. I work with photography alongside organic materials, drawn to their embodiment of decay, life, and the cycles of nature-elements that allow reality and humanness to surface in my work. I no longer see books as vessels for words, but as extensions of the poems themselves; objects that coexist with the text in harmony, embodying feeling in their physical presence.
